Johanne Monette, MD, M.Sc
Dr. Johanne Monette is a geriatrician and epidemiologist. She is the Scientific Director of the Collaborative Research Network in Long-Term Care in Montreal. This network of 17 institutions represents over 3,500 elderly persons who live with a wide range of health problems for which they use many different medications. The care they receive is therefore at greater risk of being sub-optimal. The research network's goal is to promote research that seeks to optimize the quality of care provided to this frail population.

She has expertise in the development and implementation of educational intervention programs designed to improve therapeutic approaches to frequently observed geriatric syndromes. With her collaborators, her research has particularly focused on optimizing the prescription of anticoagulant and antiulcerative agents, antibiotics, and cholinesterase inhibitors. Her team is currently working on improving the therapeutic approach to psychological and behavioural symptoms in dementia.

She has also completed several studies with data from large administrative databases, including that of the Régie de l’assurance-maladie du Québec (RAMQ), the provincial hospitalization database (Med-Echo) and the database on housing in the greater Montreal region.

Dr. Monette is actively involved in the McGill Geriatric Oncology Interest Group. She collaborated in a comparative study of the health status of elderly patients in short-term care units living with and without cancer, and participated in a cross-sectional study on the health and functional status of elderly cancer patients over 70 referred to an Oncology clinic for chemotherapy. Currently, she is working in partnership with this research group on a pilot longitudinal study of the association between health and functional status and the impacts of cancer and its treatment among a population of elderly patients recently diagnosed with cancer. She supervises a resident who is completing a fellowship in Geriatrics/Oncology and studying the clinical experience of Quebec physicians who regularly treat elderly people with cancer.
