The SOLIDAGE name

The name SOLIDAGE has been chosen to represent the McGill University-Université de Montréal Research Group on Integrated Services for Older Persons.

Solidage (verge d'or), is the French botanical name for 'goldenrod'. Many of the approximately 125 species of the genus 'Solidago' are found in Quebec and Canada, including Solidago graminifolia and Solidago canadensis. SOLIDAGE brings to mind 'solidarity', 'consolidation' and other related words that convey meaning in both English and French.

The goldenrod plant has many positive traits and beneficial associations. This robust perrenial:

- marks the end of summer with numerous golden yellow flowers;
- thrives in a variety of habitats;
- has naturalized in North America, where most species originate;
- is associated in folklore with healing of wounds, and as a symbol of treasure
  and luck.

Coordinator Rebecca Rupp proposed the name as the goldenrod plant symbolizes the scope and strengths of the SOLIDAGE Research Group's work. The qualities of the plant reflect the challenges and diversity of the older population in an affirmative, positive context.
